Matthew 5 The Sermon on the Mount Jesus climbs a hillside in Galilee, sits down, and speaks words that turn the world upside down. In this short teaching we look at Matthew 5 in its biblical setting: the mountain that echoes Moses at Sinai, the poor and occupied crowd who first heard these words, and the kingdom Jesus describes — where the empty, the mourning and the gentle are called blessed.

We walk through the Beatitudes, the calling to be salt and light, and the words of Jesus about the law: He did not come to destroy it, but to fulfil it. Then we listen to the six times He says, “Ye have heard that it was said… but I say unto you,” and we see that He is not making the law heavier, but deeper — moving from the hands to the heart. That is exactly what Jeremiah and Ezekiel had promised: a law written on the heart, and a heart of flesh instead of stone.

Matthew 5 is not a ladder we climb to reach God. It is a portrait of the life that grows when God reaches us. First the blessing, then the walk. First grace, then the shining.
