Hanieh was born in Tehran, Iran, during the Iran-Iraq War and raised as a Muslim. From childhood, she was taught to read the Quran, pray in Arabic, wear the hijab, and believe that Jesus never died on the cross. After moving to America as a teenager, Hanieh began searching for truth. While studying pure mathematics at UC Berkeley, she started questioning Islam, prayer, Allah, and the empty rituals she had known all her life. One night, while bowing in Islamic prayer, she realized her prayers felt like they were going into a void—and she walked away from Islam.
