SearXNG is great.
I think the features I’m missing are easily adding more engines (haven’t looked much into it), and automatically blacklisting domains from coming up in searches.
When DMing me, remember that you have to trust both your server’s admin, as well as mine.

+1 for miniflux, has all the features and it’s really light.
I didn’t know about news, might give it a look. I’ve been using Microflux on Android.
Is the Lemmy high just as good? Or is it the Reddit methadone?
Because they can’t go beyond “the enemy of my enemy is my friend” level of logic.
I refuse to install the official Reddit app, so only Lemmy on the phone. Which was probably 90% of my Reddit usage.
I’m enjoying it quite a bit, so I haven’t logged on old.reddit.com in a while.
Still have my account, just in case, but I’ve pretty much migrated at this point.
They will if they have a better UX, computational resources, brand recognition, and can sign you up with your current Instagram account. Which seems to be the case.
Will everyone join? No. I’d rather go back to Reddit than to sign up for it.
Will the vast majority of people join? Yes.
The new Threads app had something like 10M users in 7h. The whole of Lemmy is 2M users.
It’s still a free userbase that they didn’t have to grow.
They might not go down that route if they are successful from the beginning to establish a community. But they are still competing with Twitter and Bluesky, so they probably approached the instance admins to get an insurance that there would be activity from the start.
The last thing they want is to be the next Google+ (which they managed to beat). You have to guarantee buzz from the very beginning. After the metaverse flop, they cannot afford another one.
Not sure if I understand…
Wouldn’t that mean you’d prefer the fediverse to be separate from Meta as well?
Sorry, but I think you’re missing the main point.
The risk is not to be tracked, the issues is Eembrace, extend, and extinguish (EEE): https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Embrace,_extend,_and_extinguish
They are currently competing with Twitter and Bluesky, they just need users to kickstart their new platform. That’s where the fediverse comes in. All Meta has to do is to convince the instances to give them users.
Meta has a lot of money to throw at UX, they will design a better one than Mastodon. Their instance will also be more reliable (since they have money for lots of computational resources). This will allow them to spread their influence on the fediverse (so that people follow others on Threads), growing up to be the largest instance, and then just defederate from everyone else to “stop spam”. People will then move to Threads so they keep following their friends there (because their friends signed up for meta, since it was all compatible anyway).
And only then, they will start to harvest data and put ads in front of you.
I doubt that will be the case.
As much as I like the fediverse, meta has some serious budget to through at UX. They will get people to use their app to interact with the fediverse, and then once they are the biggest instance, they will just defederate.
Logical reasoning?
I just laid it out to you, and your only arguments are “the circumstances are different” and “sometimes they do good things”.
They just burnt through a shit-ton of money on their metaverse idea, they are not gonna be doing anything but shrewd business decisions for a while.
I’ve got a bridge to sell you.
If they didn’t care about the fedi population, why are they making it compatible then?
Ok answer this then:
What’s stopping Meta from spreading its influence on the platform (so that people follow others on threads), growing up to be the largest instance, and then just defederating from everyone else to “stop spam”? People will then move to threads so they keep following their friends there (because their friends signed up for meta, since it was all compatible anyway).
Have you ever tried to administer your own email server? It’s a huge hassle to do, as you’ll automatically be blocked by Gmail, outlook, etc and have to jump through a lot of hoops to stop yourself from being blocked.
The same thing will happen to the fediverse.
As much as I respect the guy, I think he’s being naïve in that blog post.
This post explains very well why one should be very weary of this.

It’s Eembrace, extend, and extinguish (EEE) all over again. It has happen countless times, and will keep happening. I can’t believe people still fall for it.
Meta wants to capture the twitter refugees, and they will do the same thing.

Decided to go with a smaller instance from the start, as I think we can all see what happens when one entity holds too much power within an ecosystem.
Also wanted to go with one that was not defederated from other instances (nor defederating others as well). Checked a bunch of lists, and decided to go with my current one.
Doubt nobody will ask his opinions about Reddit though.
Don’t get me wrong, he’s a great guest, but he’s a bit too big for Lemmy right now. He has probably a very busy schedule, and can’t take a couple hours off just to chat with a dozen people.
A single tweet from him will take far less time and get 100x more views.
