I’m thinking you don’t. “I’m not showing up to my shift but I have someone to cover for me” is still “I’m not showing up to my shift”

Yes I’m in the US and I gave US-centric advice because OP is in US.
We all know US has shit labor laws. Although to be fair, I think in this scenario it would work the same way in ny home country of Brazil. When you want to switch you’re essentially saying “I’m not showing up to my shift”
I’m not sure in what country that isn’t insubordination and isn’t subject to legal penalties by the employer.
Of course it’s legal. Why wouldn’t it be?
She should approach it by either following the stupid rules or finding a new job
I second others advice by saying as little as possible. “Family issues” “personal obligations” “health problem”
No use being honest with a boss that isn’t understanding
All hail Stallman
I feel like VS Code / Chrome only sort of count
While I think AHK is great and I always use it if I’m daily driving a Windows install… it’s pretty sad that you have to use such a janky language + have this software always open listening to events just to do custom hotkeys on Windows.
On Gnome I can just write a shell script, go into Gnome settings and then add a hokey to it. I don’t need to install anything, it works much more fluidly, and takes up less system resources.
There’s a saying in portuguese that goes more or less like this: “what’s a fart for someone who already shit themselves?”
Ie you’re 30 minutes late another 5 isn’t gonna make a difference. Just slow down
Jeepers Creepers
I can still the remember the little jingle
I get right wing stuff only on YouTube shorts typically. And I think it’s because I’ll watch them. I find it interesting in a detached sense.
Good to know what you’re up against. Same reason I try and watch as many Trump speeches as I reasonably can.
Sort of hard to say. I grew up an illegal immigrant in a big city. When I was 6 or so my parents would bring me with them when they went out to clean offices at night.
I pulled a fire alarm at like 1am without knowing what it was and my parents hid me in the trunk of the car. Told me to be quiet. They didn’t speak English and were afraid the cops could take me away.
I got hit with the belt a few times. When I was around 12 I tried to fight my dad during a belting and got my ass beat.
Also when I was around 12 I was in a car accident on the highway in an SUV that flipped 4 times. Everyone went to the hospital except for me, I was perfectly fine.
I was in Vegas with my brother for his 21st once and he had spent all his money. We were in the airport on the way back and there are slot machines there. He asked me to borrow some money to play some slots- he said if he’d win he would share with me.
On the last $2 bet he hit a jackpot and we each got $600
One time I was playing pool at the bar in my early 20s and hopped a ball to make the game winning shot on the 8 ball - won $50. It was beautiful. I rode that high for a week.
Speaking of high, I also overdosed on heroin (fentanyl, really) and was revived with Narcan in an ambulance once. That was a very confusing experience. Coming to slowly with many lights and people in uniforms around you.
I’ve been robbed before, with 2 guys grabbing me by each arm while a 3rd goes through my pockets. While they talked shit I just stayed quiet.
I’ve gotten in bar fights and have been kicked out of bars. I stood up for a friend at a house party at around 18 and got my ass beat because of it. He was too scared to do anything. Around that same time period I had a short couple months long fling with a woman in her 40s. I felt like a badass at 18 but nowadays I look back and it was weird.
I’ve done intramuscular ketamine injections with exactly the right dosage to be under anesthetic - aka khole. I’ve done a lot of drugs - nothing in my life has ever come close. I’ve also done two cycles of steroids. I’ve never had so much sex as during those cycles. During this time period I caught chlamydia & gono.
Also I made like $5,000 on Dogecoin and like $3,000 on Bepro. (Easily lost more than that overall with coins)
Those are some arguably crazy things that have happened to me. I’m not sure if my life is tame compared to the average. I guess it all depends on perspective. I know people who have seen much more craziness out of life.
I went total cold turkey a couple of days before July 30th. I figure I’m either quitting for good reason or not at all. Why a half measure? I edited over the thousands of comments in my 14 year old account and came over to the Fediverse.
I downloaded a mobile app for Lemmy and am using Kbin on desktop. I also started using Mastodon. In addition I got an RSS reader and followed a variety of feeds so I have fresh content, sort of a front page, without relying on a website to curate it.
My experience online has gotten significantly better. Not necessarily because these tools are more intuitive or effective than reddit, but I think because I’ve started to think more comprehensively about how I source content online and the relationships I have with certain websites.
We’ll have to wait and see what actually happens. People went and signed NDAs with Meta. It’s up to the instance owners ultimately, and the big ones will inevitably start a cascading effect one way or the other.
My gut tells me we’re gonna see federation with Meta
I’d actually argue the opposite. Less and less people care about the actual product and the more and more people are buying ideology.
The next logical step is to abstract away the physical product and simply sell the ideology.
“I’d like some coffee with no sugar please”
“I’m sorry sir, we are out of coffee with no sugar. We only have coffee with no milk. May I suggest the diner across the street?”
They are trying to sell ideology. Like Starbucks selling “free trade coffee” or companies incorporating the pride flag into their logo. You don’t just buy physical products anymore.
They wouldn’t do it if it didn’t work.
The problem is that this assumes there is a way to tell the difference between AI generated and human generated.
Very soon this may be practically speaking impossible. Then what? You make a human board and some person makes a chatbot that you can’t differentiate from a human.
We are screwed - there may be some ways with verification… but is that practical at scale? Would websites require users to install Spyware that watches your Webcam in order to confirm you’re not a bot?
And what if a bot could just generate a video feed to trick the website?
Only private and strict groups will remain AI-free… and if they get too big they won’t work anymore
Ya I really like how they remove all the “listicles” top 10 BS list pages that are all just SEO content farms
I think for general things Kagi is great. I looked up some stuff about WW2 and it brought up great articles. The AI summary thing is really cool, although I think they just use the ChatGPT api.
Ultimately I stopped using after my trial because if I’m going to pay for a search engine I want it to be at least on parity with the free options
I’ve been experimenting with Kagi recently. At first I thought it was good but then I was searching for a model number for some niche Honda motor and Kagi wasn’t any help. Neither was Duckduckgo
Google found it for me, though.
Having said that, I recently switched to Duckduckgo as my main search engine although I’m open to suggestions.
I agree that we need to get off of Google just because like you said - they are the gatekeepers. I don’t trust a large company with that, much less Google
It’s functionally the same for the majority of the userbase. Certain subs are still chaotic. Others have normalized.
Maybe a small chunk of reddit’s old-time/ power users have left. And since those people probably generate content at a much higher rate than average user, perhaps reddit user experience will decrease a couple % or so.
Not really gonna be noticeable for most people, but I think its likely.

Specific game subs like /r/victoria3 or /r/slaythespire
Those video subs that show crazy stuff
/r/terrifyingasfuck /r/crazyfuckingvideos /r/fightporn etc
If anyone knows a lemmy/kbin community that’s similar I’d appreciate a share
Question. Are you physically present at the job site when you get someone to cover for you?
