Water is actually a very unusual substance. When it freezes into a solid, instead of becoming heavier and sinking in liquid water, it begins bouyant and floats.

If it didn’t have this property, our planet would have turned into an ice ball and never thawed out.

The first time I heard about this was in reference to garage door remotes.

If your remote was too far away, you placed the remote under your chin pointing to your skull to amplify the signal using your head.

I once read a blog from a sailing group that pointed out that there is possible sea route where you could sail from Halifax, Nova Scotia in a straight line and end up in Vancouver, British Columbia.

Capitalism works because of greed and the concentration of power to a small group of people. But the more successful it is, the more inequality there is and eventually the system will fail … for the majority not the minority.

The problem to any human system are humans … conversely, the solution to and human system are humans.

We are our greatest ally and we are also our own worst enemy.

About half of all the organic mass of the human body is bacteria … I think the average is that the human body is half of our own cells and half is bacteria that grows alongside us (actually inside us)

Your gastrointestinal system is basically a continuation of your outer skin … it does the same thing of keeping foreign material away from your internal organs.

When you think of your body this way … we are all just basically tubes.

There has never been a true democracy anywhere and anytime in history, even today.

Every democratic government in existence currently today is severely affected or influenced by monied, corporate, aristocratic, hereditary or powerful interests to some degree. Some countries manage it better than others but all of them fall short of a true democracy … a system that is controlled by the people and benefits everyone equally.

If you gathered up all the elephants in the world and all the ants in the world.

The ants would be heavier.

Canadian here and surprised / not surprised by the ranking

I’m indigenous Canadian who grew up in a semi remote community … My family didn’t have running water or indoor plumbing until 1989! In Canada! A supposed first world country.

I agree that the whole rags to riches idea is a complete sham that doesn’t exist … unless you are already born wealthy … and then that doesn’t make any sense because you never had rags to begin with.

My story is more rags or bare clothing … I’m not wealthy … I just have enough to be comfortable … I’m not in debt and I drive old beater cars and trucks and never owned a new vehicle in my life … I bought small properties away from big city centers where land is cheap but living is hard

And yes … I know most people are probably not capable of doing what I did … I grew up with lots of people in my situation and I was fortunate enough to figure a way out, mostly through the luck of finding the right partner who worked just as hard as me, parents who were great guides and teachers and a small network of family and friends I could count on.

Exactly … I’d say more 80 percent of everything you ever want to do with an image … the other 20 percent is probably stuff that isn’t worth doing anyway … I use GIMP all the time and it’s the image editor I use the most often

How about the fact that a large majority of the internet and cloud services run on Linux powered systems

Firefox, Thunder, LibreOffice, Kdenlive, Audacity on GNU+Linux … (I’m no pro which is why I’m on Ubuntu but even still, I haven’t paid for software in years)

Some of that advice is true … work hard, work at something all the time and do your best … but always for yourself and your well being and for your own self and your family.

I’m Indigenous Canadian and this is what all my family did including me. I worked for myself all my life … building, construction, renos, fixing stuff, building stuff all the time … I did some work for companies and businesses but always with the idea that I wouldn’t work more than I had to and only to gain a bit more money to move on as soon as possible.

Twenty five years later … I own three properties, multiple old vehicles that I maintain myself and I own everything I have without debt … I’m not the wealthiest but I am debt free and have a healthy savings and I still work for myself gaining a bit more every time .

I tried that for a while and it never quite worked for me. I’d always end up with it falling off, over my mouth, around my neck or over my ear. It’s been so long now, it almost just feels like a relief when I can sleep alone in the dark.
