I wouldn’t recommend hosting it from your home network. Even if you are only having a couple of buddies on there it could easily be ddosd by a post going viral or something. Also you would permanently leak your personal IP adress to the outside world. There are ways to protect yourself against that but it’s probably not worth the effort. You are better off just renting a cheap vps for your 50 person instance. You can rent those for like 5usd a month. Share that money with a handful of friends. Everyone puts 10 bucks in and you can pay upfront for multiple years.

I’m not a web developer. I’m sort of a sysadmin so i have some experiences maintaining machines for web apps for other people. And you are right…text will not create massive amounts of data. But a lot of tiny transactions can bring down machines surprisingly fast even if the total amount of data is relatively small.

I guess we are here to experience it first hand. I don’t think anybody…not even the developers have a clear idea of how well this will scale. There is only one way to find out lol

The full name of a community includes the instance is running on. For this community here the instance is asklemmy@lemmy.ml . If you are referring to community you should include the instance to avoid confusion.

To the issue of duplicate communities: That issue existed on reddit too. Communities with slight variations in the name always existed. Sometimes the owners of some variation of the community just decided to forward their users to a “main community”. Sometimes multiple communities coexist. I believe that in most cases a certain “main community” will establish itself as the one that the majority just accepts as the “real deal” because it has the most activity and the best moderation policies.

I don’t believe this is how it works though.

Let’s say your tiny 3 person instance is connected to a big one. I believe it only pulls in content from the communities somebody from the small instance is subscribed too. Correct me if I’m wrong.

this is at least the first time I invested a significant amount of time in it.

But I used a couple of federated services before that are not part of “the fediverse” and I really like the idea. I used XMPP back in the day and I use Matrix from time to time. I just don’t have any friends who use it.

I deleted the apps on my phone and my ipad so I don’t get any push notifications. I will probably only post on here. There are some communities I kinda rely on when it comes to information, tutorials etc. that are not really existing here. So I’m trying to kinda slowly move everything over here as far as I can do that. Hoping that more and more communites will be coming over too.

I honestly prefer the interface and how clean everything is here. Makes me wanna use reddit as little as possible lmao

I think online dating is shit and I don’t mean it in a “It doesn’t work for me” kinda way but I believe it’s objectively shit. In an ever faster world that demands more and more flexibility from people that also extends to dating. It introduces a certain arbitrariness to romantic and sexual relationships. We now have dating apps that you can use to scroll through potential partners like a furniture catalog. It reduces people to a commodity and I hate being confronted with that. I believe it could in combination with the realities of late stage combination harm our ability to establish deep and meaningful connections to people.

It’s literally what my mom warned me off 20 years ago and now I believe she was right.

Some instances might just focus on a topic. And I agree that makes sense.

On Reddit all the subs are community run too. So if two subs merge or redirect or something that is just because the mods of that one sub decided to do so. It’s not like reddit is forcing anyone or making those decision. Nothing stops you from creating r/askreddit2 and decide to not merge it with the “main” askreddit.

The same thing is possible here. And give it some time. At some point I hope that certain communities for a topic will establish themselves with good rules and good moderation over others and then there will a natural flow towards those well established communities and there will be less overlap. It really is exactly the same situation here as it is on reddit.

I use Linux Mint and Windows 10. I’m kinda stuck on windows because I’m a gamer. I can run a fair share of my games on Linux but it requires a lot of compromises and there are some games that straight up don’t work because of anti cheat.

I wanna go full Linux though.

At least on my instance everything is running fast, snappy. I like the clean interface. Haven’t encountered any major bugs yet.

The only downside for me so far is that there is not a lot to see yet. The only active posts and communities are about lemmy itself. Which is understandable of course but I can’t wait to actually get to the phase where I actually get to experience real content lmao

So if I create the community “beerpong” on my instance feddit.de you can subscribe to it, it will go in to your feed like it was on yours. You can interact with it just as if it was on yours.

But you or someone else could also create the community “beerpong” on your instance lemmy.one. If you view communities on other instances than your own there name will show up differently. Since I’m on feddit.de the community shows up as “asklemmy@lemmy.ml” on my screen to indicate which community exactly it is.

So if you will there could be “duplicate” communities. But imo that’s not really an issue. On Reddit you essentially also have duplicate communities. They have slightly different names. There is r/publicfreakout and then there is r/actualpublicfreakout. You might think that two communities could have the same name on lemmy but they actually can’t if you understand that the full name of a community is the combination of the community name and the instance it’s running on.

I loved winamp. I’m still nostalgic for it. Honestly. Some of the buttons where questionable in size and function but generally I don’t think there is any better UI for a music player.

I wish I could listen to spotify through third party apps…specifically through winamp.
