That’s why I used the phrase “faking empathy”, I’m fully aware the chatGPT doesn’t “understand” the question in any meaningful sense, but that doesn’t stop it from giving meaningful answers to the question - that’s literally the whole point of it. And to be frank, if you think that a unique question would stump it, I don’t think you really understand how LLMs work. I highly doubt that the answer it spit back was just copied verbatim from some response in it’s training data (which btw, includes more than just internet scraping). It doesn’t just parrot back text as is, it uses existing tangentially related text to form it’s responses, so unless you can think of an ethical quandary which is totally unlike any ethical discussion ever posed by humanity before (and continue to do so for millions of users), then it won’t have any trouble adapting to your unique questions. It’s pretty easy to test this yourself, do what writers currently do with chatGPT - go in and give it an entirely fictional context, with things that don’t actually exist in human society, then ask it questions about it. I think you’d be surprised with how well it handles that, even though it’s virtually guaranteed there are no verbatim examples to pull from for the conversation

I don’t think this technique would stand up to modern LLMs though, I put this question into chatGPT and got the following

“I would definitely help the turtle. I would cautiously approach the turtle, making sure not to startle it further, and gently flip it over onto it’s feet. I would also check to make sure it’s healthy and not injured, and take it to a nearby animal rescue if necessary. Additionally, I may share my experience with others to raise awareness about the importance of protecting and preserving our environment and the animals that call it home”

Granted it’s got the classic chatGPT over formality that might clue someone reading the response in, but that could be solved with better prompting on my part. Modern LLMs like ChatGPT are really good at faking empathy and other human social skills, so I don’t think this approach would work

Yeah, everything is nuanced, that just doesn’t mean that there are no right options.

Intelligence and maturity is holding a view while also recognizing that there are flaws in that viewpoint.

No matter what subject you’re talking about, there are flaws in every stance. That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t take a stance, but too many people act like they have to be 100% behind their stance in order for it to be valid

Yeah frankly you’d be an idiot to agree if some random guy came up to you and said "I want to buy your house for $1mil cash but you have to agree literally this very second and come with me right now to do the paperwork lol

No chance you could buy real estate in cash within an hour - unless you happened to already be in the process of buying something when this happened

And the smart move would be to spread it around anyways, no telling what a sizeable investment in - for instance - Apple might have had early on, maybe it would change history so that it didn’t turn out successful

Better to do some bitcoin, some of each major stock you can recall, and funds for industries you know will take off

As much as I’d love to think otherwise, i think a significant amount of the good feeling and comradery that we’re seeing now is due to us being in a bit of a honeymoon phase. You saw the same thing on Mastadon after the Twitter migration, everyone was singing kumbaya and holding hands, but overtime it started to regress a bit (though not nearly as much) towards a more “twitter” feel.

I’m sure over time it’ll stop being quite so feel-good and happy, but the fact that it’s community run and less centralized will help a lot in the long run i think. A lot of the friction and tension on Reddit was due in one way or another to it’s centralization - if you had a popular subreddit that was run by shitty mods, there wasn’t much you could do about it. here, you can just create a new version of the same sub on a different instance, and it’s a lot easier for people to “move” over to the new one.

I think the lower population helps a lot as well, right now the majority of the people on Lemmy are good faith users who care about the platform and want it to succeed. When you have 100’s of millions of users like Reddit does, you’re going to get a lot more bad faith users and people who just want generic content to scroll on

A windows PC for gaming A macbook for my laptop An Arch Linux PC/Server that I use for most of my work and that hosts all my services

The “why” for each is probably pretty self-explanatory for each. I’m a firm believer in using the right tool for a given job, and I think Windows has the best gaming experience, Mac has the “best” laptops (for my own subjective value of “best”), and linux is the best for software development and service hosting.

In a perfect world I’d use linux for all 3, but while gaming on linux has gotten a lot better, it’s not quite “there” yet, and I just love the new Apple chips for laptops in terms of battery life, speed, and heat management

I like the desktop app, and the community - but the content is still a bit sparse. The nice thing about reddit was that you could find content for literally anything and every time you refreshed there’d be new content to view. It’s obviously not nearly so busy here, but hopefully that will improve with time.

In the meantime I’ve been juggling this and Mastadon to get my fix lol
