Are you saying you only allow-listed certain instances? Federation is on for all instances by default, you don’t need to enable federation for each remote instance in the admin panel. Remove everything from the allow-list, add any thing you don’t want to see in the block-list and all those little instances should start appearing.
How are you sorting? New and top hour/6 hours have been pretty good for getting mixed content for me. Hot and active are a little weird.
Bad patterns to never repeat
I took the amount I estimate I would need to retire right now at my current age and divided that by my current hourly rate. So it’s 124,594 working “man-hours”, as you say like 60 years of working. But that value goes down every year I do actually work and as my retirement investments grow.
I assume OP asked it that way to normalize and anonymize it a little.
124,594 hours (14 years) would be enough to retire right now, anything less than that wouldn’t be immediately “life changing” since I’d still have to hold down a job.
I have yet to use a writing stylus on a tablet that can compete with pen and paper and no traditional document editor can handle free-form notes at any reasonable speed. I don’t see how you could really take class notes on a laptop or tablet when there are formulas, charts, and other complex objects involved.
And that’s not to say in the 50-100 year time frame I think that’s impossible, but I haven’t seen it yet.
I think people, including u/spez, are not remembering how fluid a lot of subs were on reddit. The large subs grew to where they were by luck and good moderation, they weren’t/aren’t immune to upset, and reddit maintains/ed several smaller competing communities for every main one (games, gaming, truegaming). The same will happen here eventually but we need time to see who’s actually running the best communities, not whoever got to the name technology on the largest instance first.
You want me to host a community on my phone but only some stranger is allowed to curate the content on it? I don’t really understand this system you’re describing.
