  • If you don’t want porn, but still want NSFW to be enabled, you can block entire communities by clicking the big red button in the sidebar on the website or by visiting the community within your Android or iOS application and see if there’s a “Block Community” option.

If you block it on the website, it’ll be blocked on all other means of access as well.

  • Well, I run an instance, too. It’s not big at all, but I was thinking about the issue of scaling, too. You can only scale up a single server so much…

But on the other hand, Lemmy is still young. We’ll find solutions to that problem.

Also, interesting article. I only took a glance at it, but having only two tables kind of suggests that Reddit is using a relational database. So, if they’re not “normalizing” everything, why not use a completely different paradigm, like what MogoDB etc. has?

  • I used to be pretty active on Reddit and I kinda became more and more “sour” and unfriendly over there, because the whole community just dragged me down for some reason.

Here, it’s like a breath of fresh air and most people are actually quite nice. Topics have finally become more interesting and there’s no such thing as an echochamber. Critical thinking seems to be possible here, as well.

So yes, I became way more active again since I’m on Lemmy. Also, I host my own instance and I put a lot of effort into it, so I want it to be in good standing with other instances. Participating in friendly conversations will help with that.

Well, you could totally host your own instance and write your own replacement UI for it.

Or use a client for your OS. There’s one for Linux and several for Android and iOS.

I personally don’t consider the UI “dated” or “old” at all. I really like it. It’s rough around the edges, yes. But “old”? No. I just want something that’s fast and not the sh*tshow that’s new Reddit.
