It was never true, I’ve been paying almost exclusively with cards for years, but since Covid & SumUp (easy and cheap card reader, including a phone extender) I finally feel comfortable simply not having cash at all most of the time. Last year’s Christmas market had several booths with PayPal options, as did a few flea market’s I’ve been to this year.
